    Brasserie Lipp-Outdoor Dining

What does the retractable glass wall mean for the Brasserie Lipp, a beloved French café located in Gothenburg, Sweden? The establishment has long built its reputation on premium outdoor dining. However, that experience was limited to favorable weather, with only a finite number of outside tables available. The management wanted to capture the essence of open-air dining while maximizing capacity and ensuring comfort regardless of the weather.

    Specifically, they faced multiple challenges:

    • Limited outdoor seating: Outdoor dining is premium but scarce—only available in good weather, leaving indoor space underused when conditions are fair.
    • Desire for ambiance: They wanted to retain the bustling energy and visual connection with city streets even when guests are seated indoors.
    • Space optimization and flexibility: The café needed a solution that expanded its usable area without requiring costly extensions or permanent renovations.
    • Effortless operation: Staff needed a system that could easily transition between enclosed and open modes to adapt to weather swings throughout service hours.

    Retractable Glass Wall Resolution

These requirements called for an innovative architectural feature—one that could blend form and function seamlessly, elevate the dining atmosphere, and deliver operational ease. The Panora retractable glass wall and windows provided the solution. With a touch of a button, the operable glass walls transition into open space requiring no additional effort.

Brasserie Lipp installed the Panora Vertical Retracting Glass Wall and Window System, a motorized operable glass solution engineered for hospitality environments. Key technical and design features include:

    • Vertical retraction mechanism: Unlike folding or sliding systems, Panora’s panels lift vertically—either upward to create passageways under the raised panels, or downward for window-balustrade configurations. This design opens 66 % to 75 % of the rough opening, equating to nearly 100 % of usable space.
    • One-touch motorized control: With the press of a button, panels retract or close smoothly, enabling instant mode shifts between open-air and sheltered dining zones.
    • Custom size & finishes: The installed setup comprised two units, each approximately 3 m wide by 2.9 m high, using 8–16–8 mm tempered glazing for clarity and durability.
    • Integrated shades and screens: Panora is notably the only retractable glass system on the market designed to accommodate both shading and insect‑screen accessories, further enhancing comfort and design flexibility.

Through this solution, Brasserie Lipp created a fluid design that brings outdoor charm indoors, while retaining the flexibility to seal the space when needed.

The Difference is the Panora Retractable Glass Wall

Panora uses vertical retraction to move glass panels up and down. For glass wall and glass door applications, the panels open in the up position permitting passage underneath. For window walls, Panora opens by consolidating panels in the down position, creating a built-in balustrade.

In either case, Panora creates an opening of 66% to 75% of the rough opening (depending on number of panels used). This equates to 100% of the truly useable space.

    Integration Options

Panora is a versatile product. Anywhere you can imagine a glass wall, you may also imagine the advantages of an operable or retractable wall. Windows are commonplace. But a retractable glass wall or window is distinct. Standard doors open and close without a glance but a retractable glass door will “raise” the eyebrows.

In fact, Panora is appropriate anywhere that requires distinctive and operable architectural solutions. It is versatile in sizing, in finishes, and in the number of panels used.  Panora is the only retractable glass window, door, or wall system that can integrate both shades and screens.

With its unmatched versatility, aesthetic refinement, and operational benefits, Panora has enabled Brasserie Lipp to thrive across seasons—with more seats filled, more ambiance offered, and more satisfaction delivered.
